Expedition to Domuyo Volcano

Expedition to the Domuyo
The roof of Patagonia - 4709 m.s.n.m.

North Patagonia never ceases to amaze us and this place is no exception. A unique landscape with impenetrable rock formations, long and deep valleys criss-crossed by white water rivers.

In addition to the beauty of the area we must bear in mind that climbing Domuyo demands physical strength and stamina so a good level of fitness and moderate prior training are essential. This volcano has high mountain characteristics. Beginning at 2,500m and with campsites above 3,000m, the trek involves long, slow-climbing tracks which gradually take us to higher altitude. This is noticeable in slower breathing, possible sickness and fatigue. Lower air temperatures are noticeable at this altitude, especially when the sun is not shining.

Those wishing to attempt this ascent must bear in mind the aforementioned information, in particular that a good level of fitness and some prior climbing experience is necessary.

Due to the demands of the area we will be travelling through, the mountain conditions, the weather (including exposure to snow) and the requirement to make camp with a basic level of independence, this trip is considered an ‘Expedition’.

Ascenso al Domuyo

7 day itinerary

This is a summary of the Domuyo Volcano expedition. For more information on the exact route and the details of each day contact info@laninexpediciones.com.ar

Day 1: he Group meets at the bus station in Zapala (Neuquén Province). After the guide’s initial introduction we will be transported to the Varvarco area where we’ll stay in cabins and finalize details for the ascent the following day.

Day 2: Early in the morning we will travel to Base Camp ‘Los Tachos’ at 2,500m and begin hiking alongside the river through a beautiful and arid valley, rising slightly as we approach Camp 1. The horses will carry the tents, common equipment and food. Walking time approx. 5-6 hours. Free camping.

Day 3: After breakfast we prepare our backpacks with food and group equipment and continue to Camp 2, at 3,800m. We will climb gently up the side of a long ridge, enjoying views of North Patagonia. We make camp within rock walls which provide some protection from the wind. Walking time approximately 5-6 hours. Free camping.

Day 4: At dawn we begin the ascent to the summit. The first part involves skirting around the slopes until we reach the 4,000m point where the altitude becomes increasingly evident. We continue using crampons and walking poles as the terrain becomes steeper and the snow is harder. From this point onwards the climb becomes more demanding than what we have experienced so far. The mountain conditions include loose rock and snow and the altitude may cause nausea, fatigue, headaches and dehydration. Having gained this altitude, the first sunlight allows us to enjoy the impressive high Patagonia landscape and gives us a little warmth too. The ascent continues slowly, with stops in safe and comfortable places, as we near the summit. Last time to reach the top: 12:30 – 13:00hs. Having taken photos and enjoyed the beautiful view we will descend slowly and carefully to Camp 2. If the group is feeling good and the weather permits, we will continue down to Camp 1. Approximate walking time for this day: 12 – 13 hours. Free camping in tents.

Day 5: After breakfast we break camp, get the tents and equipment ready for the horses to take down and then begin our descent to Base Camp. From there we continue to Varvarco where we will have dinner in the cabins and sleep in beds. Accommodation in cabins.

Day 6: Reserve day in case of bad weather. Should the weather conditions be unfavourable at any time and the responsible guide decides it’s not possible to proceed with the planned itinerary, we will wait until the following day to see if the weather improves and the guide considers it safe to continue.

Day 7: We will rise early, have breakfast and pack our backpacks ready to begin our return trip to Zapala. Group farewell at the Zapala bus terminal and end of service.
